Anyone 18 years or older will have the opportunity to become world-class developers using the Apple ecosystem to learn coding, design, entrepreneurship, and essential professional skills.

The Apple Developer Academy with MSU in Detroit is a one-year program. Students can expect to work on real-world challenges and connect with community and industry partners. In addition, MSU offers a month-long Foundation Program in Detroit designed for learners curious about the app economy, and interested in learning more about coding, design, and app development in general. For current MSU students interested in learning more about app development, visit the iOS Design Lab for more information.

The Academy is open to all, with a priority for Detroit residents. Each student at the Academy is unique. We are looking for passionate and creative individuals with a variety of backgrounds, big ideas, and motivation to participate. You don’t need to have a background in coding, design, or entrepreneurship to be a student in the Academy. Academy students are problem-solvers who are not afraid of tackling the world’s toughest challenges, are ready to learn, and want to make an impact.


How to apply
There are no prerequisites to apply to the Apple Developer Academy with MSU in Detroit and there is no preparation required for the application. We are interested in getting to know you.

This application will ask about your interest in app development and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You’ll need to fill in your full name, address, email, etc. At the end of the application, we will ask you to upload a brief video (max 30 sec, max 100MB) showing us one thing you're really good at that you could teach anyone in the Academy. The application can be paused and resumed as needed.

You will receive an email from developeracademy@msu.edu about the next steps by July 2021.

  • About the Apple Developer Academy with MSU

    What is the Apple Developer Academy with MSU? 

    The Academy is a space where students learn about coding, design, and entrepreneurship within the Apple ecosystem. 

    What happens in the Academy?  

    Students get to work with different teams on real-world challenges and develop apps to solve them. Fundamentals of coding in Swift, app design, and marketing will be covered. Students will also have the unique opportunity to interact with and learn from Apple representatives and other industry partners.

    Where is the Academy? 

    The Apple Developer Academy with MSU is located in Downtown Detroit. 

    How much does it cost? 

    There are no costs associated with attending the Academy. All needed technology is provided to students in the program. 

    When are classes?  

    The Academy begins on October 4, 2021 and ends on August 2, 2022. It requires students to attend 20 hours a week Monday-Friday, either during mornings or afternoons based on preference and availability. 

    Who are the teachers/mentors? 

    Mentors have a passion for guiding the next generation of developers. They come from a variety of backgrounds and will share with students they expertise in coding, design and/or entrepreneurship.

    Who can apply?

We are looking for students who have big ideas and are motivated to participate in app development. We focus on design, coding, and entrepreneurship skills. Interest in any of these areas is a plus.

    What's in the application?
    We’re interested in getting to know our students, their interests, and their backgrounds. No test required. 

    When should I apply?

    What happens after I apply?
    This application closed on June 28, 2021 at 11:50 p.m. EST. You will receive an email from developeracademy@msu.edu about the next steps in July 2021. If you have not already applied, please check again next spring for 2022-2023 applications or to attend a Foundation Program to learn more.

    Selected applicants will be invited for an interview as a second step. Communication will be sent by email to selected applicants throughout the process. The Academy will be accepting approximately 100 students.

    What is expected of me to be able to graduate? 

    We expect students to commit to the program, attend every day, and fully participate in the projects you and your team will undertake. 

    What will I get out of this experience?  

    Students will learn to develop apps for the world’s most vibrant ecosystem. In addition to receiving a certificate of completion, students will also participate in career-building opportunities, meet renowned guest speakers, and network with professionals in the tech industry. More importantly, students will build life-long connections with classmates and mentors.
