As a coding mentor at the Academy, Benia find’s immense joy in guiding and supporting the next generation of tech enthusiasts on their learning journey. Her role involves helping learners understand complex coding concepts, assisting them in problem-solving, and fostering a collaborative learning environment. What she enjoys most about this role is witnessing the growth and transformation of our learners as they gain confidence and proficiency in coding. She has found it incredibly rewarding to be a part of their success stories.
Prior to joining the Academy, Benia worked in the financial services sector processing accounts for vacation resorts in Mexico.
Benia is currently pursuing an Associate in Applied Science for Software Engineering at Oakland Community College and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. When not in the Academy, you can find Benia spending time with her 4 year old son, recreating styles from her “Outfit Inspo” Pinterest board and living vicariously through her Sims 4 families.

If you were to offer students one piece of advice as they start their journey at the Academy, what would it be?
Stay Inquisitive. Never stop asking questions and seeking answers. Whether it's debugging a piece of code or understanding a complex concept, a curious mind is a powerful tool in your toolkit.

Have you always wanted to work in tech? What is your personal history with tech?
The desire to work in tech is fairly new to me. I’ve always been a tech savvy person but my interest to pursue a career was sparked about 4 years ago at my previous job working on a report that was completely in code and I became obsessed with learning how to read it.

What was your experience with coding, tech, iOS, or entrepreneurship before the Academy?
I had a good understanding of basic coding fundamentals and had just enrolled in college to start my degree but the academy helped me take my learning process to the next level.

What made you want to be a mentor? What are you most excited about?
I wanted to become a mentor because I love the Academy space and energy. It feels as if anything is possible here and it makes me want to keep learning and growing. I’m most excited about having the opportunity to give to someone else what my mentors at the Academy did for me when I was in your seats.

Where are you from and where do you live now?
I’m a Detroit girl, born & raised! But I did reside in Las Vegas for 4 years as well.
